Poliya - Composite innovators in Eurasia
Celebrating its 30-year anniversary this year, Poliya Composite Resins and Polymers, Inc. (Poliya) is a key player in the EMEA composite industry. Through innovative research and development, customer-focused solutions, sustainable growth strategies, and international partnerships, the company can address an ever-widening target market.
Founded in 1983, Poliya specializes in developing and manufacturing polymers and composite resins. Most widely known for its flagship product, the Polijel™ gelcoat series, the company also manufactures UPE-polyester resins, vinyl ester resins, pigment colour pastes, solid surface chips, adhesives, bonding pastes, mould release agents and waxes.
Organization and background
Poliya is headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey, and has offices in Germany and manufacturing facilities in both Turkey and Italy. The company, whose diverse product portfolio is exported to 25 countries throughout the world, is one of the fastest-growing composite resin manufacturers in Europe. It is a member of the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC), the Turkish Chemical Manufacturers Association (TKSD), and the Turkish Composites Manufacturers Association.
Commitment to the chemical industry
Since its inception, Poliya has operated by this guiding principle: never sacrifice the quality of products. Products are customized to meet the required specifications, types and price alternatives of customers. The company leads the field in research and development activities with innovative perspectives from teams of qualified professionals and by using the most sophisticated equipment. It supports customers’ technical needs during and after purchase. Poliya consistently allocates funds to the advancement of technology, education and use of the most recent quality control system. Since 1983, the company has respected nature’s balance and environmental safety while continuing to exist “in every part of life.”
Poliya provides customized gelcoats to new and existing customers, in the required amounts and with the appropriate urgency for customers that require a quick turnaround. The company anticipates that its customer services and support, combined with innovation, will significantly increase its market throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Russia and Turkey.
Recent innovations have further enhanced its product portfolio including resins, gelcoats, pigments and mould release products. The demand for its most prized composite resins, including Polipol™ unsaturated polyester resins (UPE), Polives™ vinyl ester resins and Polijel™ high-performance gelcoats, continues to increase and, in 2012, it recorded a 62% increase in revenue and a 38% increase in production. Also in high demand are Poliya’s other products such as unsaturated polyester resins (UPE), vinyl ester resins, pigment colour pastes, solid surface chips, adhesives, bonding pastes, mould release agents and waxes.
In 2012, several technological infrastructure investments significantly contributed to its on-going expansion, i.e. the use of liquid malic anhydride, fully automated batch loading and a new 50MT capacity reactor. All of these operational improvements resulted in a 70% increase in domestic sales and a 65% increase in third quarter exports compared to the same period in 2011.
Recent product innovations
By the end of 2013, the company will have fully implemented a new packaging system which will not only cut down on waste but also increase the efficiency of the distribution network. To reduce the consumption of harmful and expensive packaging waste, all of the products will be shipped in traditional packages but using a disposable interior liner. New to the composite industry, this packaging innovation will allow customers to reuse or return those containers without concern for cross colour or product contamination.
The number of standard and customized products is continuously increasing as Poliya continues to explore different solutions to ensure the highest surface quality. The company has increased the range of products that can be used as a barrier coating. One example is the flexible, vinylester structured Polijel™ barrier coat series with a higher resistance to osmosis and blistering in finished products. Boat hulls, swimming pools, waterslides and automobiles are just some of the successful applications made better by these new barrier coating products. The surface quality of resin systems used in SMC-BMC applications for automobile parts has also been improved. The research and development team has created coloured gelcoats with significant performance improvements.
Innovative products in the mould release range are much easier to apply at both very high and very low temperatures while substantially increasing the industrial life span of composite moulds.
With all eyes on green energy, Poliya continues to develop special resins designed exclusively for composite parts used in rapidly developing renewable energy projects in the wind, solar and transportation sectors.
Poliya, in collaboration with its sister company, Camelyaf Resins™, is eager to continue allocating time and resources to customizing products for both new and existing consumer needs in 2013. This relationship has already resulted in a 25% increase in capacity and productivity in 2012, while allowing the company to significantly increase the acquisition of new clients and greatly expand its European distribution network.
Poliya will continue to invest in projects both in Turkey and worldwide. Its mission is to have a sustainable production increase along with a continued focus on research and development.
Poliya is sensitive to the environment at every stage of developing a new product. Beginning with raw materials and extending through the packaging process, it maintains an awareness of the impact of products on the environment. The company is now manufacturing an environment-friendly eco-pigment series free of heavy metals. Of great importance to its research and development are the exploration of alternative raw materials, studies to reduce its carbon footprint and efficient recycling systems.
Focus: “Our mission for 2013 is to have a sustainable production increase along with a continued focus on research and development. Most importantly, Poliya remains at the forefront of environmental consciousness.”
