University of Maine earns $3.9M to develop ocean engineering and advanced manufacturing laboratories

During a laboratory dedication this morning at the University of Maine, the Harold Alfond Foundation announced a $3.9 million grant to the University of Maine to match $9.98 million already raised, formally establishing the Harold Alfond W2 Ocean Engineering Laboratory and Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center on campus.

The project, which will take advantage of modern technologies including a new reactor, will allow Hexion to meet increasing demand for its waterborne epoxy products used to formulate waterborne coatings, polymer flooring, and sizing for glass or carbon fibers used in wind energy, automotive and aerospace applications.

At BYK Additives & Instruments the amended labeling for N-ethylpyrrolidone (NEP), which can be found as a solvent in additives, has also necessitated adjustments to the labeling of some rheological additives. Parallel to this, an internal interdisciplinary project team has focused on developing suitable solvent alternatives.
