Early History of Composites
Early History of Composites
- 1959: First commercially available skateboard made of solid wood and metal wheels (fig.1)
- 1970s: Development of the 7-ply maple skateboard, obtained by hot-pressing, veneers are typically stacked with a [02/90/0/90/02] layup
This remains the industry standard
Recent Developments
Recent Developments
- Most renowned brands include composite layers (glass, kevlar and carbon fibres) on their maple construction for improved strength, flexibility, lightweight and durability(fig.2 & 3)
- Environmental solutions increasingly proposed, incorporating bio-sourced resins, natural fibres (e.g. flax, hemp, bamboo) and upcycled thermoplastics (fig.4)
- More futuristic advancements propose hoverboards, using superconductors, magnets, and liquid nitrogen
