Notox’s linen-reinforced boards take on the world’s biggest waves
Basque surfboard manufacturer Notox has designed a line of boards reinforced with flax fibre and recycled carbon for French professional surfer Clément Roseyro.
The Big Wave Challenge surf competition will be held from 1 November 2024 to 31 March 2025 in Nazaré, Portugal. This coastal town, 100km north of Lisbon, has been attracting surfers from all over the world for surfing competitions for several years now, and this time of year is a hot spot for the world’s biggest waves.
French professional surfer Clément Roseyro has chosen to conquer these legendary waves on a series of tow-in surfboards designed especially for the occasion by French board manufacturer Notox, based in the Basque Country.
Bio-sourced or recycled materials
These boards incorporate several durable materials for optimum strength, vibration damping and high-speed control. The core of the boards is made from agave, a plant whose fibrous wood makes it a natural material similar to the synthetic foams available on the market for this type of application.
The boards also feature woven reinforcements in European-certified flax fibre, manufactured by Belgian weaver Libeco, a member of the Alliance for European Flax-Linen & Hemp.
They also feature recycled carbon fibre fabrics supplied by Airbus Nantes. Initially destined for landfill, the waste powdered fabrics, used to manufacture preforms by hot calendering, are transformed by forming, dry cutting and vacuum impregnation, then combined with Sicomin’s GreenPoxy 56 biosourced resin.
“The new tow-in boards for Clément are a fusion of high-performance composite technology and sustainable design,” comments Pierre Pomiers, CEO of Notox. “Manufactured by master shaper Benoit Rameix and illustrated by Luc Rolland, these boards represent the latest in responsible innovation. We’re delighted to be able to offer Clément the safest, most sustainable surfing possible in the waves of Nazaré“, he says.
Handmade since 2009 in the Notox workshop in Anglet (Basque Country), the boards are available in 7 construction technologies (cork, recycled expanded polystyrene, extruded polystyrene, linen, white beech or walnut and upcycled carbon). They all carry the Ecoboard Gold label, the highest standard for environmentally-friendly boards.
