China’s first ceramic-based composite material manufacturing park starts construction

China’s first ceramic-based composite material manufacturing park has started construction at Xi’an Aviation Base. Ceramic-based composite material is a new type of composite material with high temperature resistance, long life, and oxidation resistance. It has been used in aircraft engines, aerospace engines, aircraft heat-resistant structures, space lightweight structures, brakes, nuclear energy, photovoltaic electronics, etc.

Within the new park, Xi’an Golden Mountain Ceramic Composites Co., Ltd. plans to invest a total of 2 billion yuan (€ 280 million) to build special components for aerospace use, carbon-ceramic brakes, special components for photovoltaics, etc. 

Cheng Laifei, chairman of Xi’an Golden Mountain Ceramic Composites Co., Ltd., explained that the ceramic-based composite material project began engineering research in 2006, and carried out industrialization research in 2011. After the completion of the park, it will enter the mass production stage. The project drives the development and industrialization of high-performance composite materials, and forms a new material industry system with independent intellectual property rights. 

The company relies on the Ceramic Composites Engineering Center of Northwestern Polytechnical University (in Xi’an) where the project “High temperature resistant, long life and oxidation resistant ceramic-based composites and their application technology” is run by Zhang Litong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). Currently, the company has developed and produced more than 20,000 special components in more than 100 categories around various industrial fields including aeroengines, aerospace engines, and space lightweight structures.
