Hi-Fiber, the line of dental reinforcements launched by Moi Composites’ dental division, is one of the most recent innovations in dental care. It uses the company’s CFM technology to design and 3D print dental reinforcements using a unidirectional continuous strand of thermoset fiberglass.

Composites’ dental division – is one of the most remarkable innovations presented in recent years in the dental sector. With Hi-Fiber, the know-how of former researchers from the Politecnico di Milano in advanced automation and materials engineering met the clinical and dental experience of professionals in the sector.

This line of reinforcements uses the company’s patented CFM (Continuous Fibre Manufacturing) technology, which utilizes a single strand of continuous fibre composite material, proprietary software and a robotic process to smartly design, 3D print and rapidly cure fibres precisely where needed in a sustainable way. Production scrap, precious metal or expensive material waste are thus eliminated, saving time and resources. The company’s engineering approach makes it possible to use a high-performance material in a smart way, already exploited in sectors such as aerospace, automotive and nautical to achieve maximum performance while limiting the weight and volume of structures.

The continuity of the fibre combined with the Hi-Design proprietary design software allows the reinforcement structure to work in traction, distributing the loads of the masticatory cycle evenly along the entire structure. A reinforcing bar for a full arch contains an average of 9 metres of fibre on which to discharge the applied forces, with a tensile strength of around 1000 MPa. In addition, the chemical adhesion of the material with aesthetic acrylic resins allows the creation of monolithic prostheses, in which the outdated concept of reinforcement bar is replaced by a continuous fibre-reinforced aesthetic resin. Tooth detachments, cracks and fractures are drastically reduced, ensuring a longer life of the prosthesis without the need to return to the dentist for further repairs. Finally, additive manufacturing technology makes the entire production process free of waste.

From a clinical point of view, the reduced thickness of the fibre (0.4 mm) allows solving even the most complex cases in which the thicknesses are extremely reduced. With a density of 1.9 g/cm3, Hi-Fiber has a specific weight four times lower than other materials and can reduce the weight of a final prosthesis up to 60% compared to the same one reinforced with traditional materials, with important clinical benefits such as rapid healing and patient comfort.

The partnership includes clinical trial cases using Hi-Fiber products: efficient, effective, metal-free dental reinforcement structures designed and 3D printed from advanced unidirectional composites.   • Hi-Fiber full armor for definitive prostheses - Hi-Fiber Element Structure made for full-arch prostheses on implants. Very high fracture resistance. Protection and lightness. Simple to use in combination with all types of implants, anchors (screwed or conometric) and teeth on the market. It adapts ergonomically to the geometries of the fabrics, even in the most complex cases.
  • Hi-Fiber element for partial protheses - Ideal for fixed solutions on implants that only involve sections of the dental arch. Offers the same quality performance as Hi-Fiber Full Armor. Simple to use in combination with all types of implants, anchors (screwed or conometric) and teeth on the market.
  • Hi-Fiber immediate load for temporary prostheses - It allows major changes, even chair-side, to the prosthetic shell and supports the prosthesis in the thinnest points without aesthetic alterations. Structure designed in the pre-operative phase in which the position of the implants is not known.

The story behind Hi-Fiber

Hi-Fiber was born from the needs of a dental technician and a dentist, Gianluca Brandolini and Andrea Nicali, and the technology patented by Moi Composites. The problem originated from the impossibility of finding an implantological solution with a natural biomechanical behaviour and resistance to high loads without compromising aesthetics.

The continuous glass fibre material, fully transparent with an elastic modulus similar to the cortical bone and a strength higher than most metals, was too difficult to model manually, and the results were unpredictable and unsatisfying.

“We needed a machine that could 3D print in continuous fibre,” says Brandolini. One evening, listening to the radio, Andrea Nicali became aware of Moi Composites and the two soon got in touch with Moi’s team.

After five years of analysis, refinements and clinical cases, Hi-Fiber now is a widely adopted solution in Italy for the reinforcement of fixed and removable prosthesis, overdentures, Maryland bridges and orthodontic splints, with many others coming in the near future.

Moi Dental has entered into partnerships with leading companies in the sector such as Vita Zahnfabrik, ETK/Lyra and 3Shape, and its production process is certified under UNI EN ISO 13485.
