Linen fiber domes mass-produced for Column Morris
So Parisian, the Morris columns were developed by Gabriel Morris in the 19th century. In 1900, the city counted some 200 of these columns; today, there are 550, operated by JCDecaux.
The dome of the Morris columns is made up of 23 different parts, including 14 made of composite materials. To design the roof, the transformer Mecelec Composites developed a new RTM complex using a linen nonwoven from Ecotechnilin and a new BMC flax material from Terre de Lin.
It is the first flax fiber application for a BMC process for mass production.
Bénédicte Durand, Managing Director of Mecelec Composites specifies:
“The new solution combines all the advantages of composite materials – lightness and resistance – with strict environmental requirements. It is adapted to the security constraints required for this type of street furniture.”
Bertrand Vieille, sales manager explains :
“Today, it is the only BMC with 100% linen fiber reinforcement; it uses partially ABS recycled resin which was specifically created for this project and we had to work on the processes in order to adapt them to this new material.”
All urban furniture is designed to be fully recycled, like the famous Morris columns. And all these products are likely to be refurbished to new to be reused elsewhere.
