CMS Advanced Materials Technology, a leading Italian company in the sector of machine tools for advanced and composite materials, and the prestigious German institute Fraunhofer Iwu, have developed an LFAM (Large Format Additive Manufacturing) solution to increase competitiveness in composite materials machining. The research activity culminated in the recent launch of CMS Kreator, a hybrid machine for 3D printing and milling of composites.

When the project was proposed to Bercella, the company did not hold back, ready to face this important innovation, but rather immediately introduced it to produce the molds for the Restomod Maserati MV 3200 GTC, a project strongly desired by Tomaso Trussardi.

The car has been presented at the opening event of the Motor Valley Fest 2021, that is a global showcase supported by the agreement for the enhancement of Made in Italy, shared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ice Agency, with Emilia-Romagna and APT Servizi Emilia-Romagna for the promotion and internalization of Italian companies.

This Additive Manufacturing technology makes it possible to take an important first step towards a sustainable technology, and to a circular economy for the reuse of the materials, to greatly increase the flexibility and speed of production of composite parts. This is possible thanks to the multiple steps that can be integrated directly from the birth of the idea to the 3D CAD mathematics, immediately realizing the fiber models or producing the carbon fiber molds filled with polyamide. The subsequent phases are processed by the same work center, simply changing the print head.

This extremely innovative solution brings great savings both in terms of time and costs because the CMS Kreator technology, developed after four years of work with the support of Bercella, allows to significantly shorten the production chain. The technology is therefore already available and, if with the Restomod project more than half of the car will be produced, the future prospects are undoubtedly aimed towards the production of a complete car using CMS molds, showcasing the versatility and speed that you can achieve with their use.

Bercella and CMS, thanks to the visionary project of Tomaso Trussardi and the deep innovative roots of the Motor Valley, form the first team in the world to have introduced Additive Manufacturing technology on such a large scale for the realization of a complex project, such as the Restomod one.
