IMT Nord Europe partner of the Interreg Compovert project

Since April 1, 2024, IMT Nord Europe’s Centre for Materials & processes (CERI MP) has been contributing to the 5-partner Interreg France-Wallonie-Vlanderen Compovert project (Cross-border development of functional composites with plant reinforcement: Valorization of local by-products), financed by Europe under the INTERREG V FWVL call for projects, with co-financing from the Walloon Region.

By placing artificial intelligence tools at the heart of the selection and processing of renewable inputs (including organic waste), the Compovert project aims to achieve substantial gains in productivity, as well as in the quality of the fibres and lignin that can be isolated for biocomposite applications. The project will provide materials with the qualities demanded by companies, and offer a range of lignins with improved antistatic, antibacterial or antioxidant properties. The recyclability aspect will also be taken into account.

In addition to fibres from dedicated flax and hemp crops, the Compovert project will focus on shaping local by-products such as lignin and lignocellulosic fibres of all sizes, from cellulose nanofibrils (NFC) to long fibres, into biocomposite products using various plastics and composites technologies such as thermocompression (with or without vacuum assistance) and filament winding.
