Current Trends and Innovations in Sports & Health Composite Applications – Part 1

Ski, surf, swing! From winter sports, to water activities, to tracks, composite materials are omnipresent in physical activities, through equipment but also medical devices for users. Whether for amateurs or professionals, for able-bodied athletes or handicapable ones, composite materials’ unique properties have made them a staple of innovative projects in these fields. This session will give an outlook into current and future endeavors involving composite materials.

3 pm – 3:30 pm : Workshop by Mitsui Chemicals Europe (Germany)

Presented by Christos Karatzias Business Development Manager New Business Development Division on the subject of “Carbon Fiber meets Polypropylene – Improving Performance and New Opportunities for Thermoplastic Composites”

4 pm – 4:25 pm: Keynote session

The topic of “How Using Composites Changed the Way Golf Head Components are made” will be tackled during the keynote, hosted by Dominic LeBlanc, Senior Concept Engineer (USA) at Callaway Golf, with Dale Brosius, CCO of IACMI, as moderator.

4:25 pm – 5:10 pm: Industry session

Bjorn Ivar Austrem, Technical Director at Madshus (Norway), will present the topic “How Carbon Fiber Can Make a Seriously Fast Ski Even Faster!”. Laurine Calistri, Research Engineer at Proteor (France), will also give her input on “Easyrun Running Blade: How to Innovate in the Prosthesis Field, Outside the Scope of Standard Use.” The session will also include a presentation from the Event Sponsor, Suprem, on the subject of “Thermoplastic composite materials for Sports & Health”, by Anatole Gilliot, the CEO.

Composite materials have enabled athletes from all over the world, and through a wide variety of disciplines, to optimize their performance all while ensuring safety. Their lightweight and resistant qualities have allowed composites to be used to create or upgrade sports equipment, and protect athletes. Last but not least, composite materials also make it possible to incomparably improve quality of life, and this session will explore how they can help provide equipment that will end up turning someone’s life around.

Christophe Lecomte, Director of Biomechanical Solutions R&D, at Össur (Iceland) along with Fleur Jong, Professional Sprinter, and Co-founder of the Para Athletics Foundation (Netherlands) on “Developing Sports Specific Prosthesis: From Concept to Finished Product with Composites.” This keynote will offer an exclusive viewpoint and feedback from an athlete with an engineering perspective and outlook on lower limb prosthetics’ future developments.

4:25 pm – 5:10 pm: Industry session

Julien Duplay, Composites Methods Engineer at Decathlon (France) on ” From Eco-design to Eco-innovation.” And Eric Jackson from Apex Watercraft will discuss “Using Advanced Composites to Advance Kayak Design.” And a presentation of “Thermoplastic composite materials for Sports & Leisure” by Anatole Gilliot, CEO of Suprem
